Over the last couple of months I rediscovered the joy of reading books.
Not just any old crappy cheap fiction that once finished is instantly forgettable.
No.
I've rediscovered the classics I used to read in my years at university when I studied English Literature and History a lifetime ago in Germany.
Tolstoy, Brecht, Austen, Goethe, Kafka, Poe, Shakespeare... And I'm in the process of reading new ones that have been on my wishlist for decades.
The classics are in a league of their own because they challenge you in so many ways. If you stick with them, they can transform the way you think and change your life.
These timeless stories that reflect the human condition in such lyrical and eloquent ways accelerate your growth, knowledge, and wisdom over time.
Some of the classics I'm actually re-reading, but after so many years, I read them with fresh eyes and an evolved mind.
I'm not the same person I was in my 20s, but I have found a way back to what I was so passionate about back then.
And here's my first quote that perfectly describes my situation:
“We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.”
― T. S. Eliot, Four Quartets
In such a profound and beautiful way this quote is reflected in The Fool and The World cards in the Tarot:
Returning to where you started but as a different person.
Reflecting on your past with a new perspective.
Visiting familiar places after a long absence, feeling at home and yet like a stranger at the same time.
Going back to your roots, reconnecting with your authentic self, accepting who you truly are, and no longer pursuing the person you wanted to become all those years ago.
✨What have you returned to recently after a long period of absence?✨
"I say don’t find yourself. I say never know who you are. Because that's what keeps you striving and discovering. And it forces you to be humble in your judgements and accepting of the differences in others."
―Mark Manson, The Subtle Art Of Not Giving a F*ck
Thankfully, I've never found myself and never will. I'm a constant traveller open-minded to new opportunities, passions, challenges, and knowledge.
The feeling of arrival can be soothing and offer the stability and security that humans tend to crave, but it can keep you stuck and closed to new growth.
By all means, find yourself, and after a while move on and continue your search.
✨How is your journey of self-discovery going? How do you feel about the pursuit of finding and knowing yourself?✨
"Perhaps you are overvaluing what you don't have and undervaluing what you do."
―Jordan Peterson
I don't like Jordan Peterson. A lot of the stuff he says I strongly disagree with.
But occasionally I still catch up with his writings to find out what he says rather than cancelling him out of my life.
And sometimes he does make sense. He makes me think differently. He offers me new perspectives.
There's no point in just engaging with writers and texts you agree with. That's a boring echo chamber.
You want to read what your adversaries say, the controversial people you find challenging and obnoxious.
Sometimes they come up with something truthful that makes you think in a good way.
You learn what makes them tick, where they’re coming from, and what drove them to come up with those nutty ideas in the first place.
They hold up a black mirror for you to look in and see your shadow.
✨So, what are you overvaluing that you don't have, and what do you have that you need to value more than you do?✨
Take a deep dive and explore new realms of your unconscious.
Until next time,
